Kentucky researchers and thought leaders present at KYSTATS Data Summit

Posted on: 10/16/2023

During the KYSTATS recent Beyond ’23 Data Summit, the focus was on Kentucky’s data infrastructure and what the future holds. Researchers and thought leaders presented throughout the day, discussing topics such as artificial intelligence, labor market information, short-term certifications, the teacher pipeline, broadband expansion, and data use in Eastern Kentucky.

KYSTATS Executive Director Dr. Matt Berry opened the Summit with a summarization of how far the agency has come since it was created by the Kentucky General Assembly 10 years ago, and what the plans are for the years to come.

“When KYSTATS was formed the Kentucky Longitudinal Data System was in its infancy, with just five data sources. Now we have 47 sources from 12 state agencies and more in the pipeline,” said Berry. “Since our last Data Summit in 2019, we have completed 300 reports, filled more than 1,200 data requests, and our team has presented at more than 3,000 presentations, trainings, and stakeholder meetings.”

While this work as well as the expansion of the KLDS structure will continue, Berry envisions the future of KYSTATS to expand into three new areas:

  • Engaging communities through local partnerships to encourage greater access and use of KYSTATS data
  • Building data literacy curricula
  • Designing KYSTATS research labs
